My name is JF Carter Neubieser, and I’m a Progressive running for Ward 8 City Council. I first became politically active during Bernie’s presidential run. I spent hundreds of hours organizing as a volunteer – while being a full-time student and working part-time. When Bernie lost the nomination, he urged us to stay involved, and to build the political revolution in our own communities. That’s what I’ve been doing ever since.
Last summer I worked as a canvasser for VPIRG, an environmental and consumer advocacy organization. I talked to hundreds of Vermonters all across the state about issues that affect them in their day-to-day lives. Coming back to campus after that experience, I decided to focus my political activism on forming UVM Progressives. Students’ values align almost exactly with the Vermont Progressive Party — but many students don’t even know that it exists. We are changing that. Our dedicated, hardworking team elected four students to the Burlington Progressive Party Steering Committee. Our members have been engaging in a number of community decisions, including the campaign for KBTL and the effort to put the F-35 decision on the ballot. And now, we are running the only student candidate for Burlington City Council!
This campaign is focused on creating a grassroots movement committed to ensuring that Burlington is an inclusive, livable, and sustainable city. That means addressing the affordable housing crisis, the threat of climate change, and social and economic inequity. In order to make real progress for our community, we must reinvigorate Vermont’s tradition of participatory democracy, allowing everyone –including students– to contribute to the discussion of how we move forward on key issues.
I am confident that together we can rally our community around our shared progressive values as Vermonters and Burlingtonians.
In Solidarity & With Appreciation,
JF Carter Neubieser
